This long narrow serving tray is hand-painted in Swat Valley, Pakistan, on a warm terracotta-brown ground. The panel is divided into three horizontal bands: cobalt berry vines above and below, and an ivory leaf scroll running the full length between them. The 8 by 16 inch proportion is made for console tables, bar carts, and long dining tables where a square tray would look stranded.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a long 8x16 tray best used for?
It suits anything laid out in a line: a row of glasses on a bar cart, canapes or dates and sweets passed around, candles and a small vase down the centre of a table, or bottles and jars corralled on a bathroom counter.
Why is the design in bands rather than a medallion?
A circular or diamond medallion looks compressed on a panel twice as long as it is wide. Swati painters switch to horizontal banding on long trays so the pattern reads evenly along the whole length.
Are the cobalt motifs raised?
Yes. The berry dots and leaf forms are laid on in thicker paint than the ground, giving a low relief that you can feel through the sealing gloss. It is characteristic of Swati work and it catches light along the length of the tray.
Will it fit on a standard console table?
At 8 inches deep it fits almost any console, including narrow hallway consoles of 10 to 12 inches. The 16-inch length gives it presence without dominating the surface.
