This 300 ml ceramic mug is hand-painted in the Swati naqashi style of Swat Valley, Pakistan. A midnight-black exterior is divided into vertical panels holding a crimson palmette, a turquoise blossom vine, and a band of ivory teardrops, every motif outlined in raised gold. The interior is left in plain food-safe white glaze, and even the handle is painted and laced in saffron.
Yes. The interior and the rim are finished in standard food-safe ceramic glaze. The hand-painted Swati decoration is applied to the outer wall only, so it never contacts the drink.
The exterior is decorated with enamel and metallic paints sealed under lacquer rather than fired under a glaze. Dishwasher detergent and heat cycles will dull and eventually lift that layer, and the metallic gold is not microwave safe. Hand-washing keeps the painting intact for years.
Multani blue pottery mugs are painted under the glaze and fired, which makes them dishwasher and microwave safe. Swati mugs are hand-painted over a finished ceramic body in the naqashi tradition, giving raised gold outlining and a much wider palette in exchange for hand-wash-only care.
Yes. The gold outlining and the white dot beading stand proud of the surface, so the pattern has a distinct raised texture under the fingertips.
