This tall wall mirror is set into a hand-carved wooden frame from Swat Valley, Pakistan, modelled on the jharoka, the arched window recess found in traditional South Asian architecture. The natural honey-toned timber is carved with rows of leaf-and-lens motifs, and each carved recess is hand-painted in red, green, cobalt, and saffron so the colour sits inside the relief rather than on top of it. A cusped arch crowns the mirror opening, with a carved and painted lintel panel above.

  • Rows of carved leaf-and-lens motifs, each recess hand-painted in red, green, cobalt, and saffron

  • Carved lintel panel above the arch with an interlaced ribbon motif and a central rosette
  • Natural honey-toned wood finish left unpainted between the carved motifs

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a jharoka?

A jharoka is an enclosed overhanging balcony or arched window recess used across South Asian architecture, particularly in Mughal and Rajput buildings and in the carved timber houses of Swat and Chitral. Mirror frames in this shape take the arched opening and cusped arch straight from that architectural vocabulary.

Is the frame carved or moulded?

Carved. Every leaf, lens, and rosette is cut into solid timber with hand chisels before painting, which is why the motifs sit at different depths and no two panels are identical. Moulded reproductions have uniform depth and sharp repeating edges.

How is it hung?

The frame is drilled at the back for wall fixing. Given the carved solid wood construction, use a wall plug and screw rated for the weight rather than an adhesive hook, and fix into a stud or masonry where possible.

Does the mirror work in a bathroom?

Only in a well-ventilated one. The timber is finished but not sealed against sustained humidity, so a steamy unventilated bathroom will eventually swell the joints. It performs best in an entryway, hallway, or bedroom.

Why is the paint only in the carved recesses?

It is the traditional Swat Valley finishing method for carved work. Colour is worked into the cut motifs while the raised surface is left as bare timber, so the carving reads as relief first and colour second.
