This rectangular serving tray is painted on a dark chocolate-brown ground in Swat Valley, Pakistan, and is the most subdued piece in the collection. A circular medallion fills the centre with ivory and turquoise foliage over dense gold liner work, and layered borders of cobalt and crimson vines step outward toward the rim. The dark ground makes the ivory highlights and gold detailing read as the dominant colours.
Brown sits between the two. It gives the same contrast that makes gold and ivory detailing stand out, but it reads warmer than black and blends into timber furniture rather than sitting against it.
Four, working outward from the medallion: an ivory petal scallop, a teal rule with crimson corner brackets, a cobalt and crimson vine panel, and the rim vine. Layered borders are a hallmark of higher-grade Swati work.
Light surface marks are less visible on brown than on black. The sealed gloss coat takes normal use, but sliding ceramics or cutlery across the panel repeatedly will eventually dull the sheen, so lift rather than drag items.
It is built for daily use. The finish is the same waterproof oil seal used across the range, and the design simply happens to be one of the more formal compositions.
