The whole face of this plate is cobalt, with the words of Ayat an-Nur left unpainted so the cream clay body shows through as the lettering. That reversal is harder than it looks. The painter has to work around the script rather than draw it, and one slip cannot be corrected.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the stand come with it?
Yes. The carved wooden easel in the photo is included.
What does the calligraphy say?
It is the opening of Ayat an-Nur, the Verse of Light, from Surah An-Nur (Quran 24:35): Allahu nooru as-samawati wal-ard.
Can I hang it on the wall instead?
Yes, with a standard spring plate hanger. The rim is thick enough to take one without chipping.
Is it safe to serve food on?
The glaze is lead-free, so technically yes. It is made as a display piece though, and the writing is the reason to own it, so we would keep food off it.
