Each piece is mold-cast, painted by hand with mineral-based lead-free glazes, and fired at high temperature to produce the vivid cobalt blue and white designs the craft has been famous for over 300 years. No two pieces are identical. How is Multani blue pottery made?
Each piece is mold-cast from a blended clay mixture, dried slowly, and bisque-fired in a kiln. Artisans then hand-paint each design using mineral pigments — including cobalt oxide, which appears grey-black when applied but transforms to vivid blue during the final high-temperature kiln firing. A lead-free mineral glaze is applied before the final firing seals the design permanently into the ceramic surface.

What is Kashigari?
Kashigari is the traditional name for the glazed ceramic craft of Multan, Pakistan. The name derives from Kashan, the Persian city where the broader tradition originated. Multani blue pottery and Kashigari refer to the same craft — a 300-year-old tradition of mold-cast, hand-painted ceramics rooted in Persian and Central Asian artistic influences.

Can I use blue pottery for food and drink?
Craftan's blue pottery uses lead-free mineral glazes, making it safe for dry food display and serving. As with all decorative ceramics, we recommend avoiding prolonged storage of highly acidic foods directly in ceramic vessels. For daily drinkware use, our mugs and tea sets are fully functional.
