This small rectangular tray from Swat Valley, Pakistan, sets a royal-blue panel inside a black rim, and covers the centre with a radiating starburst built almost entirely from hand-placed dots. White, crimson, and saffron dot work spreads outward from a central rosette in a technique Swati painters use to create texture and light without any solid blocks of colour.
Each dot is placed individually with the tip of a loaded brush or a fine dotting tool, working outward from the centre so the spacing stays even. It is slow work and it is the reason dotted panels cost more to produce than brushed ones.
Yes. The dots sit slightly proud of the base coat, giving the panel a subtle raised texture under the sealing gloss. It is the clearest tactile proof that a piece is hand-painted.
The black frame concentrates attention on the blue panel, so the tray reads as a framed picture rather than a plain surface. It is the most decorative of the four 8x12 designs.
They are sealed under the same clear gloss coat as the rest of the surface. Normal wiping and washing will not disturb them, but do not scrub the panel with an abrasive pad.
