This small rectangular tray is hand-painted in Swat Valley, Pakistan, on a midnight-navy ground. A diamond-shaped medallion fills the centre with ivory foliate sprays drawn over dense gold liner work, edged by a turquoise scallop band and crimson corner panels. At 8 by 12 inches it is sized for a single tea service, a bedside tray, or a vanity organiser rather than full table service.
It holds two mugs with a small plate, a single cup and saucer with a teapot for one, or a perfume decanter with three or four bottles on a dressing table.
On a narrow rectangular panel a circle leaves large empty corners. Swati painters switch to a diamond or lozenge on the smaller trays because it fills the proportions of the panel more evenly.
Yes, it is the size most often used for bedside and vanity duty. The 8-inch depth clears a standard nightstand and the raised lip keeps small items from rolling off.
The same diamond medallion composition is painted on the 8x16 long trays, though the proportions of the motif change. The 12-inch and 15-inch trays use circular medallions or allover lattices instead.
