This rectangular serving tray is hand-painted in the Swati naqashi tradition of Swat Valley, Pakistan, on seasoned wood finished in deep indigo. A large circular medallion fills the centre with a turquoise and crimson botanical spray drawn over fine gold scrollwork, framed by ivory scallop bands and a crimson-ruled square. At 12 by 15 inches it is the everyday workhorse size, large enough for a full tea service for four.

  • Fine gold arabesque liner work fills the ground behind the medallion motifs
  • Ivory teardrop scallop bands frame the inner panel, with crimson corner brackets
  • Turquoise and crimson vine border on the raised rim, saffron edge lining, and cut-out side handles

Frequently Asked Questions

What can a 12x15 inch tray hold?

The rectangular surface takes a teapot, four cups and saucers, and a sugar bowl and milk jug together, or a pair of dinner plates with cutlery and glasses for breakfast in bed.

Which tray size should I choose?

The 12x15 is the general-purpose size for a family tea service. Choose 12x12 for a compact square tray on a coffee table, 8x12 for a single-serve or vanity tray, and 8x16 for a long narrow tray on a console or bar.

How is the indigo colour achieved?

The wood is sealed and undercoated, then the indigo ground is brushed on in oil-based paint and left to cure before any motifs are added. The depth of colour comes from layering rather than from a stain.

Is the tray heavy to carry when full?

The tray itself weighs roughly 900 grams to 1.1 kg. Loaded with a full tea service it is a two-handed carry, which is why the handles are cut on both short sides.
