This lidded wooden keepsake box is hand-painted on a crimson ground in Swat Valley, Pakistan. Instead of a repeating tile pattern it uses horizontal bands of foliate scrollwork, each in a different colour: saffron on the lid, ivory and cobalt across the upper body, and teal along the base. Every leaf is outlined in black and framed by ivory pinstripes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is banded scrollwork?

A composition that divides each surface into horizontal strips, filling every strip with a repeating leaf-and-stem motif in a single colour. Swati painters use it on chest lids and door panels, and it carries over to boxware as an alternative to allover lattices.

How does it compare to the other two boxes?

The black box is the most ornate, with gold liner work throughout. The ivory box is the most neutral, with a continuous tile lattice. This crimson box sits between them: bold in colour, simpler in structure, and the most graphic of the three.

Can the three boxes be displayed together?

Yes. They share the same 8x4x4 inch footprint and the same motif vocabulary in three different grounds, so they group naturally on a shelf, console, or dressing table.

Is it suitable for gifting jewellery?

It is a common choice as a presentation box for a gifted piece of jewellery, since the recipient keeps the box afterwards as a storage piece. Line it with a folded cloth if the item is delicate.
