This rectangular Swati art tray from Swat Valley, Pakistan, is finished in a bright cobalt blue and covered with an allover hand-painted daisy lattice. A gold trellis runs across the whole inner panel, and every opening holds a blossom in turquoise, crimson, or ivory. Allover patterns take longer to execute than medallion designs and are the pieces Swati workshops are best known for outside Pakistan.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many daisies are painted on a tray this size?

An allover lattice on a 12x15 inch panel typically carries between two hundred and three hundred individual blossoms, each outlined and centred by hand. No two trays have exactly the same count.

Does the pattern continue onto the rim and handles?

The lattice stops at the ruled panel edge. The rim carries a different motif, a crimson and ivory paisley vine, and the handles are lined in saffron. Swati trays almost always change pattern between panel and rim.

Is cobalt blue the same as the indigo trays?

No. Cobalt is a brighter, more saturated blue that makes the ivory and crimson florals pop, while indigo is darker and pairs with gold. Both are traditional Swati grounds.

Can it double as a decorative wall piece?

Yes. Allover designs read well flat on a wall or leaning on a shelf. There is no pre-fitted hanging hardware, so use a plate hanger or a display ledge.
