Camel skin lamps are the other Multan craft, older than the blue pottery and made by a much smaller number of families. The skin is soaked, stretched over a wire frame and left to dry hard, then painted in naqashi work while it is still on the frame. This one is the tall capsule shape on a turned wooden base.
The skin is translucent, so the light comes through amber and the painted work turns into a silhouette. Use a warm 5W to 7W LED bulb. Anything brighter flattens the effect and anything hotter is bad for the skin.
No. The frame shape repeats, the painting does not. Camel skin is never a perfectly even color either, so the background varies from cream to a light tan.
A new lamp has a faint leather smell for the first week or so, then it goes. Keep it out of damp rooms.
Dry dusting only, with a soft brush. Water marks the skin permanently and will not come out.
