A repeating heart-and-scroll band runs right round the outside of this one, painted in white over cobalt. The blue is thinner here than on the other ashtrays, so the cream body shows through in places and the whole piece reads lighter.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does it hold a cigarette properly?
Yes. The rim is pinched into rests that take a standard cigarette or an incense stick without it rolling off.
Why does the blue look uneven?
It is brushed on, not sprayed. The streaking is how you tell hand-painted Multani pottery from a printed transfer.
Will heat crack the glaze?
No. It is fired well above anything a cigarette produces. What does damage these is dropping them on tile, so keep it on a desk rather than a ledge.
Can I use it for food instead?
The glaze is lead-free, so a few olives or pistachio shells are fine. Once it has been used as an ashtray, keep it as one.
