This lidded wooden keepsake box is hand-painted in the Swati naqashi tradition of Swat Valley, Pakistan, on a black ground worked over entirely in gold liner work. The lid rim carries an ivory scroll band studded with cobalt dots, while the body holds crimson and turquoise floral panels between cobalt scallop arcades. Black and gold is the oldest and most prestigious Swati lacquer combination.

What is the box lined with?

The interior is left as plain sanded wood. Swati keepsake boxes are traditionally unlined so the natural timber shows inside; add a felt or velvet insert yourself if you plan to store fine jewellery.

Does the lid hinge or lift off?

The lid is a fitted lift-off type that sits into a rebate on the body, so the painted pattern runs unbroken around the box with no hinge hardware interrupting it.

How much does an 8x4x4 inch box hold?

It takes several watches, a stacked set of bangles, a folded silk scarf, playing cards and dice, or a desk collection of pens and small tools. It is the standard mid-size in Swati boxware.

Can it be washed?

No. Unlike the trays, the box interior is unsealed wood, so it should only be wiped with a dry or barely damp cloth on the outside. Water will raise the grain inside.
