What is Multani Blue Pottery?

Multani blue pottery is a traditional mold-cast ceramic craft originating from Multan, Pakistan. Unlike wheel-thrown pottery, each piece is hand-pressed into molds and then hand-painted with intricate floral, geometric, and paisley patterns using mineral-based glazes. The distinctive cobalt blue, turquoise, and white color palette has made Multani blue pottery instantly recognizable across Pakistan and beyond.

The craft is also known as Kashigari (کاشی گری) — the art of decorative tile and pottery work that flourished in Multan over 300 years ago, influenced by Persian, Mughal, and Central Asian design traditions. Today, Craftan works directly with artisan families in Multan to preserve this heritage craft while making it accessible to modern Pakistani homes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What types of serving pieces does Craftan stock?
Craftan's Serving & Dining collection includes Multani blue pottery ceramic pieces — karahi pots, pizza platters, rectangular dishes, scalloped dishes, pie dishes, serving sets, condiment bowls, coasters, and ashtrays — as well as hand-painted Swati wooden serving trays from Swat Valley. All ceramic pieces are hand-painted with lead-free mineral glazes by artisans in Multan, Punjab.

Are the ceramic serving pieces food-safe?
All Craftan blue pottery uses lead-free mineral glazes, making the pieces safe for serving dry foods, fruits, sweets, and condiments. For hot food or acidic foods served directly in the ceramic, we recommend using as serving pieces at the table rather than for cooking or prolonged food storage. The pieces are fully glazed inside and out.

What is a blue pottery karahi?
A karahi is a traditional Pakistani and South Asian cooking and serving vessel — a wide, deep bowl with two handles, similar in shape to a wok. Craftan's blue pottery karahi is a ceramic serving piece in this traditional form, hand-painted with Multani blue and white patterns and lead-free glazes. It is designed for serving at the table, not for stovetop use.

Can the pizza platters be used as wall hangings?
Yes. Several of Craftan's 12-inch ceramic platters are designed for dual use — as serving pieces and as wall-hanging decorative plates. These pieces have mounting holes or flat backs suitable for display. Check individual product pages for specific wall-hanging details.

What are Swati wooden serving trays?
Swati art trays are hand-carved wooden serving trays produced by craftspeople in Swat Valley, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, northern Pakistan. Each tray is oil-painted by hand with traditional Swati folk floral patterns in bold colours — black and gold, multicolour floral, and other designs. They are available in 12x12 inch size. Every tray is individually painted, meaning no two are identical.

Are these pieces suitable as wedding or Eid gifts?
Multani blue pottery serving sets and Swati wooden trays are among the most popular authentic Pakistani craft gifts for weddings, Eid, and special occasions. Complete serving sets — including the 14-piece soup and sweet set and the dry fruit serving set — are particularly well-suited as gift items. Craftan delivers across Pakistan with free shipping on orders over PKR 15,000.

How are Multani blue pottery serving pieces made?
Each ceramic serving piece is mold-cast — not wheel-thrown — from a blended clay mixture. After drying and bisque firing, artisans hand-paint each piece with mineral-based pigments. The cobalt blue pigment appears grey-black when applied and transforms to vivid blue only during the final high-temperature kiln firing. A lead-free mineral glaze is then applied, and the piece undergoes its final firing at 900–1,100°C.
